I felt it in the air tonight. Do you know that feeling? That the holidays are coming soon. The surface is somewhere between excitement and dread. Deep down inside, I can’t wait to experience the change of seasons!”
I’m not sure why this feeling is so strong this year because I’m older (mind you, I did not say old, just older.) I am busy with life’s little delights like re-doing a home while monitoring a business and still being a “good wife” (shopping and cooking and tidying.) or because, well, the holiday season is approaching, and a little weirder and crazy than ever before.
It starts with Halloween, on October 31st, 2020, then Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yikes, isn’t it still summer? Waah! Okay, so the seasonal cycle is on! How do we adjust to sweaters, thick pants, scarves, jackets, coats, mittens, gloves, muffs, and shoes, instead of tanks, shorts, flip flops, and bathing suits? Well, we do, or we’ll freeze our ass off or catch a cold. It is not rocket science. There is an adjustment from summer to fall, fall to winter, winter to spring, and can’t wait……spring to summer.
If you have been yawning more often, feeling more tired and fatigued, wishing the sun were out for just a few more hours, thinking about sweets more, starting to come off the whirlwind summer party festivities into wanting to curl up at 9:00 with tea, join the Seasonal Transition club.
Seasonal transitions can knock people off balance with symptoms ranging from sleep disturbance, over-eating, irritability, anxiety, confusion, and a slowed down tired feeling. The animal kingdom feels the pull, and when you are in tune with the universe will recognize the push/pull feelings. You may notice similar symptoms in your pets. But the mere fact is that your signs and fatigue do not stop the holidays. The holidays are coming, like the dan, dan, dan, dan of the shark in Jaws, like the train that passes through your neighborhoods bringing more and more toys and crap to your favorite stores, and like the rain, snow, and sleet you’re going to experience around the corner. There is no stopping the holidays, and you can bring them in with a Bang or a Boom. I prefer to have Bang!
The secret for having a successful seasonal transition and an excellent, happy, and healthy holiday season is putting a P in Hel, and that means getting some help. Help means people who will bring pot luck, people willing to watch your kids while you shop, swapping white elephant gifts with friends instead of having to shop for them too, trading what you do for what someone else does to stop maxing out the cards. Help is related to taking time to help yourself, do your nails, color your hair, take a bubble bath, and breathe. Remember, actual needs are necessities, such as air, water, food, shelter, sleep, elimination, and sunlight. Everything else
is you want, or a don’t want something or you will or won’t want something. So do yourself a favor and don’t need anything this holiday season except for some help so you can breathe better, sleep, eat and drink better, tend to your home, and yes, take care of yourself every day in your unique way.
A professional organizer can also be a helpful, objective, and non-conditional person to help you get your home and business organized so you can have less clutter, an easier time finding and sorting through your holiday stuff, and someone who can hold your hand and guide you to a better and more confident and organized you.
Last but not least, it is a great idea to have a staycation, instead of fighting traffic, flights, and weather. Staycations are when you stay home, but you act like you on vacation. That means you sightsee and act like a tourist in your town, city, or state. Or it can mean visiting friends and family and hanging out in their town, city, or state! Not too much hassle, hub-bub, or hustle, just some good needed rest!
